All actions, large and small, are important for climate action. Nature is under stress. See how Aquagain creates a framework for biodiversity.
Just behind Aquagain's production halls, we have an area of approximately 20,000 m2. We used to mow the grass weekly to keep it looking well maintained. Luckily, our CEO Aslak’s daughter, Rikke, is a nature guide, and she taught us about the benefits of providing room for nature.
I think we have all heard that biodiversity is in decline, and we have lost many species of animals and plants because of the reduction of their habitats. We are now consciously working to create good conditions for diverse plant and animal life. The grass is now mown only in narrow tracks, leaving room for more flowering plants and food sources for a variety of birds, insects and small animals.
We only remove plants from the area if they are invasive and crowd out native species. The native Danish plant and animal species have adapted over thousands of years and created the best basis for nature in balance.
We aim for a much more lush area than we have today, adding new seeds and plants every year. Nature is taking over, slowly but surely, and we look forward to seeing a new aerial view of the company in 10 years.
Of course, our 20,000 m2 won't save the world. However, it's a step in the right direction and we're aware of its value as a signal, and hope that everyone who drives by will be inspired to do a little wherever they can.
Examples of other environmental initiatives
Previously, we heated the buildings with oil-fired heating. We have replaced this with a wood pellet stove and have specifically optimised the production hall heating with radiant heating. This has resulted in a significant reduction in our CO2 footprint.
We have made a major investment in an evaporator for our pickling plant, which is to be delivered and installed at the end of 2022. This means that in the future we will not have discharges of wastewater to the public sewer system. The evaporator makes it possible to reuse up to 90% of our wastewater for high-pressure flushing, as it is particularly suitable for this purpose due to the softness of the water achieved, precisely because of the evaporator. The residue from the evaporator, about 10%, is delivered to a controlled waste deposit. This means that our discharge to public sewers will be reduced to zero.
